Almost 50% of spinal cord injuries (SCI) are a result of a motor vehicle accident, many of those involving young males.

Few people know the full affects of this devastating injury. Not only does it result in the loss of limb function and sensation, it can also impact airways, bladder function & internal temperature control (just to name a few).

Westpac Scholar, Celia Vandestadt is looking to provide a brighter future for the 12,000 Australians currently suffering SGI. She is unlocking the secrets of spinal cord regeneration in the small but powerful Zebrafish. Incredibly, they have the power to regenerate damaged cells. Not just skin cells like humans but bones and organs too.

By dedicating her life to studying it, she’s aiming to give the gift of freedom of again.
